Weeping Willow

Weeping willows are deciduous trees used for shade as well as ornamental purposes. They benefit from full sun and grow to be about 50 ft. Willows grow from zones 5 to 11

The Babylon Weeping Willow, salix babylonica, is most appreciated for its weeping branches and graceful form. This tree grows quickly but will sometimes suffer from branches weakened in the winter from ice and snow. To make sure you end up with a good form, your young tree will need staking. Willow trees thrive in moist soil and full sun.

When you order willows you will get something like the photo on the left. It may have branches other than the main shoot. In order to make it look like a tree, remove any side branches, and support the tree if it does not stand straight, but leave room for it to sway with the wind. It is the only way it will learn how to hold itself up.

Planting Instructions

If you have trees, dig the hole at least twice as big as the root ball. If you have some to soil or potting soil, use it instead of the soil that was in the hole. Place the root ball without the bag in the hole, add fertilizer if you have any, add soil, tamp, water and you are done. Water often during the first year.
