Seqouia Trees

My sequoia trees are grown from seed taken from the STAGG tree (search it on the Internet) in Fresno, California. The Stagg is the 5th largest tree in the world. The seeds were taken with permission from the owners in 2007. These trees are 1 year old, and are 6-8 inches tall. I have less than 80 of them. As you can see, this is a UNIQUE tree, ideal for wedding presents or important anniversaries. Planting instructions: These are all the instructions you will get, I suggest you print this page.

Pick a location full or partial sun. Dig a hole about 10X10X10 and fill it with good soil. Carefully remove the tree from the container by turning it upside down and place in the prepared soil. Be fure the tree is at the same level it was in the container. Place Osmocote tablet 4" from the base of the tree and press it under the soil with your finger.Add about 6 inches of mulch but make sure the mulch does not touch the tree at all. The purpose of the mulch is to retain moisture for the tree. Now, water it well. You must water this tree every day until the winter sets in. failure to water it will result in a dead tree. Never allow the surface of the soil to become dry. Once the tree starts dying there is no way to get it back. Just remember the main reason for mortality in these trees is the lack of water.
If by any chance you plant this tree in a container, be sure there is good draineage so there is no water left in the bottom of the container. Wet roots will also kill sequoias.

If you are in the East Coast use a fungicide every 2 weeks or so (I use it every week), more often if you see any symtoms of needles turning any color other than green. Trees are prone to fungus which can be controlled with FUNG-ONIL fungicide. I purchased mine from a mail order place but Amazon.com carries it also. Several web sites suggest you use a few different fungicides in rotation.

Feed the tree about every 2 weeks with 20-20-20 fertilizer. Ice and snow cover is fine for this tree, but once they are gone (snow and ice), start watering again. I have a 6 year old sequoia in my back yard that is about 8 ft. tall and I have not watered for a least 3 years. During a drought, be sure to water it... and don't walk too close to the tree, you may break the little surface roots that keep it alive. I guess trees are not affected by fungus after the second year or so. Expect your trees to grow about 100 ft., much taller if you are in the valley of the sequoias in California. Don't worry, you will never see them full height because they grow only about 3 ft. per year.

I do not do fancy packaging because I want you to plant this tree the same day you receive it.

Why is this tree so expensive? Because it is unique: The Stagg is one of a kind tree, I planted 2600 seeds and over the years and I have been growing them with every care possible, fertilizer, fungicides, water, etc. These trees have been dying, specially when they are very young, less than 3" tall. I have not lost any trees that are over 6" tall but I am down to less than 300 of them.
