Yellow poplar (also called Tulip poplar) is, according to the National
Audubon Society, one of the tallest and most beautiful eastern hardwoods,
with a long, straight trunk, a narrow crown that spreads with age, and large
showy flowers resembling tulips or lilies. This tree, while being a female, does not put out fuzz, it grows to 200 feet, the leaves turn bright yellow in the fall, and it grows much faster than other hardwoods. Yellow poplar grows all over the East Coast which is it's natural range, extending to North Florida, West to Louisiana and North to Michigan. It is grown also in the Pacific Coast. Pioneers hollowed out a single log to make a long lightweight canoe. One of the chief commercial hardwoods, is used for furniture as well as toys, musical instruments, and pulpwood. Yellow poplar is the State tree in Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. |
