Fall Trees

Many tree growers get into the "Fall sale" frenzy with both feet. I have seen catalogs that sell dormant trees on September, October and November. They even print and mail special FALL catalogs for the occasion.

If you buy a tree, any tree, during this part of the year, be aware of what you are buying. If it is a living potted tree, you have no problem, however, if it is a dormant tree, you may be buying a tree that may not grow next year and if it does it will be a weak tree at best.

Why: The way nature works, as the leaves fall off the tree in the Autumn, the energy stored in them is transferred to the trunk and the roots where it remains until the cycle starts again in Spring.

When a tree is uprooted before it is allowed to drop the leaves naturally, that energy from the leaves is lost, leaving the tree weak and susceptible to diseases. This hardship is compounded because only a portion of the root system is uprooted with it.

That is the reason we don't sell dormant trees in the Fall. We wait until all the leaves are off before we start digging, that happens around December, and then all our trees go into the freezers where they remain until shipped during the Spring. This is the only way to get strong trees that are full of energy and ready to start growing again.
